There are some songs where I wonder "how on Earth did I do that?" - and this is one of them. It came from sticking together two acoustic guitar riffs that had evolved separately - the problem I always had was an inability to actually play it! The lyrics are simple but express genuine feelings about the time of year.

When it came to recording Autumn Song, I didn't have much idea of an arrangement. I expected that it would end up something like "Scarborough Fair". As I played around with ambient guitar sounds and bass melodies, however, the arrangement virtually wrote itself. I had made a couple of rather glaring errors on the main acoustic guitar track, but decided to continue with it, thinking it was probably as close I was going to get. Having created a beautiful piece with guitar, keyboards, bass, percussion and at least three layers of vocals, disaster struck! I accidentally shifted the "record" switch on and wiped out about two seconds of the main track at the start of the second verse. After all that work I was distraught.

Somehow I found the will to start again from scratch again the next day, and amazingly this time I played the acoustic guitar track through without a major error - still to this day the only time I have done that! I recreated my arrangement, and it came out even better than the first time. I'm still in admiration of the bass part I play on this - in particular the way I improvise around the main theme.

As good as the second version is, for years I was under the impression that the ruined first version had been better - until I dug it out and listened again. In reality it sounds ponderous compared to the second version. Anyway, here are both versions for comparison.

Fall down, fall down
Fall on me, fall on me
Fall down, fall down
Like a leaf from a tree

Like a leaf from a tree
Like a leaf from a tree
Like a leaf from a tree

Autumn, autumn
Here again, here again
Somehow I can always
Sense when, sense when

Like the leaves on the trees
Like the leaves on the trees
Like the leaves on the trees

Sing out, sing out
Love is here, love is here
Hold on, hold on
It may not even last another year

Like the leaves on the trees
Like the leaves on the trees
Like the leaves on the trees

The winter leaves me cold until the spring
Summertime heats up everything
But it's just not the same somehow
That's why I'm so happy now

Autumn, autumn
Here again and all around are
Cool winds, misty skies
Raining down upon my tired eyes

Like the leaves from the trees
Like the leaves from the trees
Like the leaves from the trees

Fall down, fall down
Fall on me, fall on me
Fall down, fall down
Fall on me, fall on me
Oh yeah

(Fall down, fall down
Fall on me, fall on me
Fall down, fall down
Like a leaf from a tree)

Like a leaf from a tree
Like a leaf from a tree
Like a leaf from a tree
