The first song to be reprieved from the "Lost Songs" list! I can't give an exact date of when this was written, but I'm guessing 1993/94. I played it quite a bit at the time, but the Fostex sessions had ended by then and never looked like restarting. All I had to work with was the lyrics scrawled on a sheet of A4 paper, but I remembered the chords easily enough.

The lyrics are unusual for me, I think it's the only one of my songs which is effectively a dialogue. I'm convinced that I heard the opening two lines in a Clint Eastwood film, but I can't find any evidence of which one it might be - perhaps The Rookie? Wherever I heard them, those lines were the starting point of the song, which is a kind of two fingers up to the "health police"!

I rehearsed this for a while in my new "music corner" setup. Finally I got the performance to a reasonable standard, and with my neighbours being away on holiday I had the chance to "let rip" on the vocals - perhaps I can sing after all?? I could have done with a soundcheck, as the levels aren't right and there is too much distortion, but it captures the raw nature of the performance - unleashing my inner Billy Bragg. There is even a bit of looping in there to build up to an epic finish.

I'd like to do a full multitrack version of this at some time, but for now I'm happy that Those Things Will Kill You has come to life for the first time.

"Those things'll kill you, you know"
"Well, something's got to", he said
"Those things'll kill you, you know"
"But would I rather be dead?
'Cos if I gave it all up would I stand to gain?
Or would I still be standing out in the rain?
If I built my body up would I have more friends?
Or would I still be near the end?"

"Those things'll kill you, you know"
"Well, something's got to", he said
"Those things'll kill you, you know"
"But what am I supposed to do instead?
'Cos if I lived so healthy would I reap the reward?
Or would I still be sad, depressed and bored?
If I made like Mr Clean would the difference tell?
Or would I still be in this hell?"

People like to tell you what you should and shouldn't do
And then they come and tear apart the things that matter to you
And it's a crazy situation when they try to help you so
But they'll never know

"Those things'll kill you, you know"
"So lay me down and dig my grave"
"Those things'll kill you, you know"
"'Cos I don't have a life to save
And it's my only pleasure and my only joy
Don't put me down because I self-destroy"
If it makes you feel good then it must be bad
That's what makes everybody mad
